All you need to find is a psychiatrist with experience and knowledge of ECT and discuss this last publication with him. I am in Spain at the moment but when I get back next week will try to find out if the´re any familiar psychiatrists in the US with up to date knowledge, can´t promise anything but will do my best, regards Dr Shock Dear Judy,

I am very interested in untra-brief pulse ECT. I was diagnosed bipolar 20 years ago. I became treatment resistant 15 years ago. I have tried every conceivable mix of medications during the past four years, and have not been able to function well with any of them. My fear of ECT is cognitive impairment. I am a writer and researcher, and if my cognitive function were impaired, I would not be able to pursue my vocation. Yet, as I sit here writing, I am flatlining on my current medication cocktail--staggering like a drunk, unable to drive safely, dizzy, unable to read and retain... So, my worst fears are already being realized. With other medicines, I often go to the other extreme, suffering such severe psychomotor agitation that I can barely keep from screaming. I feel that I can't go on suffering indefinitely. Do you know if any ECT docs in the Atlanta, GA area perform brief pulse ECT? Are there special machines involved in performing ultra brief pulse ECT? I have been told by an ECT doc that bifrontal does not spare cognitive function any more than unilateral. Is this true? Thank you for any information you can share.
