Your formulation is in line with the Glen Gabbard edited Introduction to Supportive Psychotherapy, an excellent little book I read after psychoanalytic training. I wonder though, is it necessary to devalue our colleagues who aren't completely informed? In my experience they're not necessarily harming people. Good to clarify this term. There is the formal meaning, which describes a well-developed techincal art; and the informal, but more common meaning, which refers to a well-intentioned, well-informed, but basically unstructured interaction with vague therapeutic intent.<br/><br/>It is the unfortunate destiny of all psychiatric terms: they eventually become diluted by misuse, to the point that they become meaningless.
