Deep Brain Stimulation for Depression
CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta reports on new research showing deep brain stimulation may ease severe depression.
In a very short video a short introduction to Deep Brain Stimulation with nice animation. It is explained as a pacemaker to the brain. The pacemaker regulates mood circuits, potentially easing deep depression no other treatments can touch. Also about who are candidates for this treatment. Answer: When all else fails.
Alas the video is not always available or other technical problems exist.
For a more detailed video and article about Deep Brain Stimulation read on globeandmail.com: Mending a broken mind.

I read the Globe’s article. My insurance company wanted my Dr to have me do this procedure, but it sounds like a pretty invasive and risky procedure, with very small study groups and approx. only 50% achieving results…I don’t think the article defined “results” either…does that mean completely better, or just a bit better.
When I looked into the Canadian studies it did not look as thought they were accepting anyone with “Atypical Depression” symptoms. Also, I find all the article I have read about DBS to be high on the hype and low on both the facts and details of exactly how many patients have done this and exactly what the outcomes have been. What’s your take on the facts and scientific proof it is worth the risk?
Thanks,

The facts and scientific prooof are meager to say the least, moreover the long term effects of DBS are still unknown due to it´s recent use for treatment resistant depression.
You will have to weigh the pros and cons against other forms of treatment and the burden of this disease. A process not to be taken easily and done with a professional who knows the ins and outs of your depression as well as DBS and who knows you very well and how depression affects your live.
