Sex, Chocolate and the Brain or Why Women Prefer Chocolate

Dr Shock
October 31, 2008
After satiation with chocolate the tasting of chocolate activates different brain areas in men and women. In men, chocolate satiation was associated with increased taste activation in the ventral striatum, insula, and orbitofrontal and medial orbitofrontal cortex and with decreased taste activation in somatosensory areas. Women showed increased taste activation in the precentral gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, and putamen and decreased taste activation in the hypothalamus and amygdala. In contrast to men in women the amygdala plays an important role after satiation with chocolate. The amygdala is known to respond to both aversive and pleasant taste stimuli. It was found that amygdala .....read more »

What Kind of a Person Writes on Wikipedia or Blog or Medblog?

Dr Shock
October 30, 2008
Wikipedia members tend to locate their “real me” on the Internet as compared with non-Wikipedia members. This it indicates that Wikipedia members feel more comfortable expressing themselves on the net than they do off-line. Wikipedia members scored lower on agreeableness and openness. Introverted women were more likely to be Wikipedia members as compared with extroverted women. How was this study done? To survey these aspects, we posted links to two online web questionnaires; one was targeted at Wikipedians and the second to non-Wikipedia users. One hundred and thirty-nine subjects participated in the study, of which 69 were active Wikipedia members. They used the .....read more »

Sex Differences in the Brain

Dr Shock
October 29, 2008
Sex differences exist in every brain lobe. For instance in the "cognitive regions" such as the hippocampus, amygdala and neocortex. The hippocampus has an important function in memory, the amygdala in mood. Both structures lie deep within the brain. The cortex is the "outside" of the brain. The part you can look at from the outside. Important for instance for stimulation with rTMS. Red structures that are larger in the healthy female brain, relative to cerebrum size Blue structures that are larger in the healthy male brain, relative to cerebrum size Sex differences in the brain can also be relatively global in .....read more »

Sex and Neuroscience, a new series

Dr Shock
October 28, 2008
The coming week I will post articles about gender and/or sex and neuroscience. Topics with sex or gender and brains will be chocolate, computer game play, depression, medical education and brain sex differences, so stay tuned. Now what is the difference between gender and sex? Sex = male and female Gender = masculine and feminine So in essence: Sex refers to biological differences; chromosomes, hormonal profiles, internal and external sex organs. Gender describes the characteristics that a society or culture delineates as masculine or feminine. So while your sex as male or female is a biological fact that is the same in any culture, what that sex .....read more »

Wassup 2008

October 27, 2008
"Whassup?" was a TV/radio commercial campaign for Anheuser-Busch Budweiser beer from 1999 to 2002. The first spot aired during Monday Night Football, December 20 1999. The ad campaign was run worldwide and became a pop culture phenomenon. The phrase itself is an alteration of the phrase "What's up?". The commercials were based on a short film, entitled "True", written and directed by Charles Stone III, that featured Stone and several of his childhood friends - Fred Thomas, Paul Williams, Terry Williams, and Kevin Lofton. The characters sat around talking on the phone and saying "Whassup!" to one another in a .....read more »

The Extreme Presentation Method: Advanced Presentations by Design

Dr Shock
October 27, 2008
This new book on presentations takes a step by step approach and promises to make a presentation that will change your audience in the way they think and act. This "work book" is divided in 5 parts: metrics, logic, rhetoric and graphics. Each part has two chapters which together form the 10 steps in making a presentation: the 10-step extreme presentation method. It appealed to me since one of the premises is that you tend to build the presentation in a way that suits yourself best. We all have different learning styles. There are about 4 to 6 different learning styles .....read more »

Photos based on experiments

The artwork I create combine my scientific curiosity with a constructive approach to making pictures. I utilize everyday objects and fundamental forces to illustrate my own experiences with wonder. Each photograph starts with the simple question: "How would this look? Is that possible? What would happen if......?" and develops through a sculptural process of experimentation See some more photographs on the website from Caleb Garland Related posts: Manipulating Photos Photos that changed the world US Army medical illustrations and photos free online ..read more »
