Strengths and Challenges of Medical Education in Virtual Worlds

Dr Shock
October 25, 2008
The educational opportunity in Virtual Worlds such as Second Life may not be a replacement for the doctor- or nurse-patient interaction or relationship, but they may serve as an adjunct or pre- or post-learning tool. Strengths of Virtual Worlds in Medical Education: In virtual worlds you can design and construct unique environments and then share them with others in a collaborative fashion. Learners actively build and interact in environments that promote creativity and social networking. Educators have to write specific learning goals for these virtual world simulations. Virtual world is available 24/7 there is an anytime/anywhere benefit for distance education students. Healthcare consumers have the .....read more »

Google Docs Guide

Dr Shock
October 24, 2008
I use Google for a lot of things. For blogging I completely rely on google reader and google notes. For my daily job I use Google docs. The most important reason for using Google docs is being able to work at home as well as at work in relevant documents. Sometimes I use Google docs for collaborative work. For instance working on a research protocol with others. The only trouble is that there is no reference program for Google docs such as endnote, reference manager or bookends. Also very important is the fact that you can use google on any computer .....read more »

The Generational Divide in Internet Use

Dr Shock
October 23, 2008
Elderly people use social networking and user generated content on the Internet strikingly less than younger people. The importance of the Internet in work, education, and daily life is incontrovertible. A digital generational divide is developing, this indicates a gap between digitally literate users and the elderly. This has disadvantages especially for the elderly since new media and co-creation have the potential to increase individuals’ flexibility, expand opportunities for information retrieval and learning, and compensate for functional limitations such as reduced mobility, vision, hearing, and cognitive abilities. How do the elderly differ from younger people in Internet use and the co-creation of .....read more »

Grand Round at Pallimed: A Hospice & Palliative Medicine Blog

Dr Shock
October 22, 2008
When I read Hospice it always reminds me of the Hospice Hotel-Dieu in Beaune, France. You certainly have to visit it when in the neighborhood. But what you should visit right now is the new grand round over at Pallimed. Below I have taken the liberty to edit down to what I considered the most provocative, most interesting, or most literary posts published in the last week. I have included all submissions in the first comment of this post so that everyone can see all the posts submitted. Dutch Grand Round 1.5, Grote Visite

October 22, 2008
At Laika's MedLibLog a description of the submissions to the Dutch Grand Round and here own choice from blogs form the Dutch medical blogosphere. By the way most Dutch bloggers in the medical blogosphere blog in English, Laika certainly does. Laika is also present at Pallimed hosting this week Grand Round with a great view of Addison's disease But those issues can be better addressed by persons in the field. I just simply want to restrict to “changing care in a very specific area, adrenal diseases, simply because I’m a hands-on expert, having secondary Addison’s Disease (Sheehan’s syndrome)”. Online Non Verbal Communication: Emoticons

Dr Shock
October 21, 2008
Emoticons allow receivers to correctly understand the level and direction of emotion, attitude, and attention expression. These results prove that emoticons perform nonverbal communication functions. Not often but so now and then I use emoticons in e-mails. Mostly because the meaning and text differ. In normal communication this is expressed mostly in non verbal communication. Non verbal communication is a strong presenter of "the mood" of the message. It is thought that that computer mediated communication (CMC) lacks nonverbal communication cues and prevents the conveyance of emotions and attitudes to receivers. A recent study had the aim to verify whether emoticons possess nonverbal .....read more »

Walking 3 times 50 minutes a week keeps the doctor a way

Dr Shock
October 20, 2008
A recent study showed that practitioners' exercise advice and the walking-programme efficiently enhanced the health-related quality of life in a high risk population, overweight or moderately depressed elderly women. The walking programme consisted of supervised walks with a group in a public park or forest tracks three times a week during 50 minutes over a 6-month period. The walking, as well as strengthening and stretching exercises were used to enhance the feasibility of the programme in different environments. Eligible women were aged 60 years and older, suffered from either moderate depression or were overweight, and were capable of walking for more than 25 minutes. Recruitment .....read more »

October 19, 2008
The Olympic games have finished so now it is time to reinstall censorship on Internet use in China. In a comment on a recent post about Computer Game Play in China the commenter proclaimed that censorship in China was severely exaggerated. Since recent: ALL visitors to internet cafés in Beijing will be required to have their photographs taken in a stringent new control on the public use of cyberspace. All photographs and scanned identity cards will be entered into a city-wide database run by the Cultural Law Enforcement Taskforce. The details will be available in any internet café. Objections to this new .....read more »
