Hands on Experience with Deep Brain Stimulation for Depression
Recently I found a hands on experience blog for someone undergoing deep brain stimulation for parkinson's disease. Now another blogger who blogs about the participation in a trial: 278-005 DBS Trial. This trial is done in St. Jude's. It's the DBS study for TRD (treatment resistant depression). Surgery is scheduled for next week.
The trial is a blind study - which means I won't know if the gizmo they give me is turned on or not. At least for 6 months I won't know. from what I understand 2 out of 3 of the gizmos implanted will be turned .....read more »

Prevention of the onset of Depression
Methods for preventing the onset of new cases of depression are manifold. The most researched prevention methods are:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the number of sessions can vary from 6-15 sessions. It can be given in a group or individual treatment.
Problem Solving. In short: Problem solving treatment has three main steps: patients' symptoms are linked with their problems, problems are defined and clarified, and an attempt is made to solve the problems in a structured way. See also BMJ. It is usually done by primary physicians and nurses.

Should a Psychiatrist Wear a White Coat?
In a study the majority of the patient population (96%) preferred their psychiatrist not to wear a white coat although 58% did not think it would make a difference in their relationship with their doctor.
The psychiatrists mostly (64%) agreed on this point, 14% added that in situations like geriatric psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, inpatient and consultation liaison they preferred to wear a white coat.
Both the patients and psychiatrists considered dress to be an important part of the doctor–patient relationship.

Dutch Grand Round Number 8 is Up.
This round will cover two english written articles. The first contribution features on Laika’s MedLibLog. She discusses the Anatomy Lesson she visited. This is a yearly held symposium organized in Amsterdam’s concert hall. She summarized Shalev’s presentation about fear.
Dr Shock writes about health search on the internet. More than 50% of the European population searches the internet for health related information. Dutch people were not investigated during this research, but people from Denmark, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Norway, Poland, and Portugal were.

The Coming Alzheimer Epidemic
In short, we are getting older with many of us. In the next 50 years a lot of inhabitants of the world will be over 65 years. A lot of them will have Alzheimers disease or Parkinsons disease.
How and what to do until then? Watch the video.
Biochemist Gregory Petsko makes a convincing argument that, in the next 50 years, we'll see an epidemic of neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's, as the world population ages. His solution: more research into the brain and its functions.
