Chocolate Education
Travel the World Through Chocolate from Dan Mitchell on Vimeo.
Video made about Katy Klassman from Vosges. She came up with a “Travel the World Through Chocolate” workshop series that teaches kids about the world through making truffles. This fun video is about their project – of www.onceuponaschool.org, designed to help you get involved with your local public school. The site was created in response to the wish of Dave Eggers for 1000 members of the TED community to participate in a project for local kids. Have fun.

Pharmacy students also have a negative attitude towards mental health patients
We recently discussed the results of a study about derogatory and cynical humor used by residents and assistants towards mental health patients. These results were in line with the results of a previous published study with medical students: ingrained prejudices and misinformation is the rule. Mental health patients are trouble.
Iatrogenic stigma is stigma resulting from the attitudes and behaviors of healthcareprofessionals this may limit help seeking when symptoms of a mental disorder first appear.
A recent study is published about the attitudes of pharmacy students toward people with mental disorders. This study was done with a survey of third year .....read more »
Bedside teaching, Computer Based Learning and Wiki in Medical Education
To me bedside teaching is number one in teaching anything to medical students. Nevertheless most of the teaching in med school is done in tutorial groups, lectures and computer based learning. This next four weeks I am supervising a group of 12 med students in computer based learning. In this coming weeks they have to solve patient problems on the computer and once a week they have to do some tasks under supervision. The combination of computer based learning and bedside teaching is rewarding and probably efficient. That's why a recent study caught my eye. They compared Computer Based Learning .....read more »
rTMS Targeted with MRI Based Neuro-Navigation in Treatment-Resistant Depression
Efficacy of rTMS for treatment resistant depression isn't impressive to say the least. The results of studies show little clinical relevance of the efficacy compared to sham rTMS, many studies have reported limited effect sizes or response rates.
A recent study tried to address one of the main concerns that could be responsible for the lack of efficacy namely the way in which the rTMS treatment
is targeted over the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC). The localization is done with "the 5 cm measure", this involves the localization of the motor cortical site for optimal stimulation of a hand muscle, usually the abductor .....read more »
Internet Dependence Questionnaire: Garbage In, Garbage Out
Scales to diagnose Internet Dependence and Internet Addiction prosper. Even when this diagnosis is doubted by scientists and bloggers alike these scales get used very frequently and their publications accepted in peer reviewed journals. It is possible that this diagnosis will be included in the new DSM V. Recent research evaluated the utility of the proposed diagnostic criteria for Internet dependence as measured by Young’s Diagnostic Questionnaire. As much as the diagnosis is debatable this questionnaire shows that the proposed diagnostic criteria do not adequately discriminate individuals scoring no Internet dependence from those currently classified as Internet dependent with .....read more »
ECT and Pregnancy
The last systematic review of this topic was in 1994. According to this recent review ECT does seem to be effective for treating mental illness during pregnancy and the risks of adverse events are low. It should be considered in pregnant women with severe mental illness such as psychotic symptoms, catatonia or strong suicidal urges.
Why is this important?
The most common mental illness during pregnancy is major depressive disorder. It is estimated that 9% of pregnant patients suffer from major depressive disorder
Untreated depression is linked to poor maternal and neonatal outcomes including poor weight gain during pregnancy, higher risk of .....read more »
Migrating From Google Notebook To Evernote
I was a great fan of Google Notebook but Google decided to drop the development of notebook. I used it mostly for blogging. It's integration with Firefox made it an easy to use tool for saving links, webpages and blogposts. I decided to give Evernote a try and I am very satisfied with this capture tool. You can sync your evernotes with all your devices, even with the iphone. It's integration with Firefox is smooth.
Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable .....read more »
Mister Kafka Pro Font
The manuscripts of author Franz Kafka had such a profound impact on Finnish graphic and type designer Julia Sysmäläinen that she decided to convert his handwriting with its unusually strong calligraphic characteristics into a digital script. The philologist took on the challenge to transform in Kafka’s rather eccentric letter forms into an balanced typographic flow. This meant not only creating hundreds of ligatures – each of them consisting of two, three or even four single characters – but also integrating numerous alternate characters to avoid successions of repeating shapes, in order to lend FF Mister K Pro a more authentic .....read more »
