International Year of Astronomy 2009
These are the guys that produce those beautiful pictures from Hubble and others. As a scientist impressed with their work, completely incomprehensible to me. This year is the international year of astronomy, above is the trailer with nice views on the galaxy. The also have a website Astronomy 2009. Enjoy.
Here is the picture of the day (1-1-2009)

STAR*D Trial Sheds Little Light on how to manage Depression in Clinical Practice
Dr Shock stayed out of the discussions about the STAR*D trials. The choice of treatments was absolutely not evidence based and the results could never by generalized to Europe or The Netherlands for that matter. A recent publication in Evidence Based Mental Health Care summarizes the difficulties of the STAR*D trials. If you need more information about this trial please visit the website: Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression (STAR*D) Study
Difficulties with STAR*D
There was no placebo arm in level one of the trial. Primary care physicians offer support, explanation and time (‘‘wait and see’’) as important interventions in the .....read more »
How to Survive Twitter?
This is not about solutions this is ....a cry for help? And yes I did read the Twitter Survival Guide. Let me start with defining the problem. Every blogger has his routine for writing blogposts. I mostly use a RSS Reader (GoogleReader). This is a collection of subscriptions to other blogs of interest, PubMed searches and content from scientific journals. Next I also check e-mail subscriptions and certain websites. I mostly discuss articles published in medical journals but also link to other blogs and websites. On average writing for my blog takes 1 to 2 hours per day.

Where? What? When? Great Flickr Mashup
This is a small web app that uses new Flickr API methods to show where in the world photos have been taken. It will show photos with a particular tag, or, if you authenticate, photos from your friends, contacts, or yourself. The size of the circle on any given place indicates how many photos were taken there.
You can click on a circle to see photos taken in that area, or zoom in if there are lots of overlapping areas.

Dr Shock went Ice Skating
It has been at least 10 years since the last tour on ice skates. Not that I went to do a complete tour, the ice is still to thin to organize such an event. Nevertheless did some ice skating this afternoon at Kinderdijk, famous tourist trap in The Netherlands. You can see some picture here on flickr. The dutch go crazy when there is a slight possibility to do some ice skating.
Maybe next week a real ice skating tour. Will keep you informed.

A Year in 40 Seconds
One year in 40 seconds from Eirik Solheim on Vimeo.
This is a time-lapse video made by Eirik Solheim of the year 2008. As you can see, it was an eventful year. The trees started off naked, put on their sexy spring and summer dresses, then stripped down again in the fall.
We just had one year, up for the next year.

Webnotes for blogging
Some tech talk now. Usually I read RSS feeds in google reader. That is how I stumbled on a post on Webnotes written on How to Split an Atom.
Webnotes seems very handy for my workflow as a blogger. You can make sticky notes and highlight text on websites. You can save and organize these websites with annotations and sticky notes in folders. You can e-mail and permalink the website with your marks and share them.
The real benefit of working with one of these products is their great citation management infrastructure. If you have the need to generate bibliographies in .....read more »
