The Technology Profile Inventory for Nerds, Geeks, Medbloggers?
You have a personality profile but you also have a technology profile. A technology profile is intended to characterize and predict how individuals are likely to respond to various aspects of information technology (IT). The technology profile is more concerned with attitudes that may change with experience, rather than with the fundamental, relatively enduring traits that make up personality. Attitudes to computers affect behavior and, in turn, influence people’s use of computers.
There are three factors or dimensions of importance for measuring the technology profile:
Confidence vs. anxiety. In the old days of the computers anxiety for computer use was still present. .....read more »
DARTS a valuable concise method to evaluate health information online
The web is often used to find medical information. An increasing number of individuals, companies and other stakeholders have their own websites. The content of these websites is largely unregulated and the enquirer has no way of telling whether the information is reliable. This makes it impossible to make an informed decision. The information found can be unreliable, unbalanced, wrong and misleading.
A short tool such as DARTS may serve as a valuable reminder to patients to assess information quality when accessing online medicines information. Due to the concise nature of the DARTS tool it may be more user-friendly than .....read more »
Predictors of nonadherence to antidepressants in depressed patients
Why is maintenance antidepressant therapy important?
Of patients with a depressive disorder 50% will have further episodes
The recurrence rate of depression is 80 to 90% after 3 episodes
Poor adherence to treatment of chronic conditions such as depressive disorder is a large problem
Nonadherence rates in recurrent depressed patients range from 39.7% to 52.7% with a mean of 46,5% over 2 years
Suboptimal dosing and duration of antidepressants increases the risk of relapse and recurrence.
Clinicians are only 50% accurate in their identification of potentially nonadherent patients.
What are the potential risk factors for nonadherence in patients with recurrent depressive disorder? This question was recently researched .....read more »

Deep Brain Stimulation for Treatment Resistant depression
New data are being published about deep brain stimulation and treatment resistant depression. Especially longer follow up is of importance. In recent published research about deep brain stimulation for treatment resistant depression, six months after surgery, 60% of patients were responders and 35% met criteria for remission, benefits that were largely maintained at 12 months. Moreover, there was no significant loss of effect requiring dose adjustments over time. So once a good stimulus dose, high change that it will remain that way over a long period of time.

The Beauty of Pi and Chocolate
This is not about the wonderful book, the winner of the 2002 Man Booker Prize: The Life of Pi but really about the number pi which is 3,14159... Mathematicians can become crazy with this mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter. This is the same value as the ratio of a circle's area to the square of its radius.
There is a website for Pi-Day, you can even buy Pi T-shirts and buttons besides learning a lot about the number Pi and maths. Pi day is on 3/14 or for the Dutch readers on .....read more »
Depression and Art: Klaas Koopmans
These sketches were made by Klaas Koopmans (1920-2006) during his admissions as an inpatient for depression. He drew his fellow patients in psychiatric hospitals on the back of his cigar boxes and note paper. Department rules didn't permit him drawing or painting. He made these secretly. He had bipolar disorder. His last admission to a psychiatric hospital was in 1963. His drawings can now be seen in Museum Martena in Franeker, The Netherlands.
I think they are very nice, a lot of emotion is simple drawings, looking very vulnerable. What do you think?Related posts:
