Hands on experience on video about electroshock therapy
A young woman and her mother on this video about ECT. Very impressive story about having ECT, side-effects and how she improved on ECT.
She also has a website The Amazing Rachel Star
Hey, I’m Rachel Star! I am a lot of things: stunt girl, producer, visionary, rapper, writer, mastermind, a cuddly form of evil, poet, and schizophrenic. I work with different TV shows around the world and I love creating and working on all forms of entertainment.

On a related note the new Journal of Affective Disorders has a neat translation of the first conference report on ECT by Lucio Bini.

Do you think that a 22 year old should endure brain damage to cure depression? Is memory loss and brain damage instead of depression a fair trade.
Did you see on her blog on October 12, 2008, Rachel Star posted this (in Rachel’s own words from the writings on her blog):
“Well while the ECT worked wonders on my schizo and depression it looks like it caused some brain damage. Which seems to get worse everyday. I get tested on Tuesday, so maybe I’ll know more then. Right now things are just hard. Homework that would have taken me an hour to complete before now takes 7 and I dont even finish then. I just have to eventually give up and lay down. Focusing is excruciating. And at times things happen that I can only describe as it’s as if part of my brain just shuts off and I’m not aware of it until later. School is so hard right now. Not the classes, I understand everything fine. The work like writing papers and reading and things like that become next to impossible for me.”

Well, after a long road of mixed emotions I am finally ready and getting electro convulsive therapy (electro shock therapy, ECT). I start treatments this Monday on the 19th and finish up Monday June 2nd.

It has been a ruff year. I was able to wash my car for the first time today. Kinda hard to explain why I couldn’t before… just couldn’t. It used to be a relaxing thing to me. Today I did it and as I did it was like my brain starts skipping like a CD player. One minute I am washing the back inside window then suddenly I am on the outside cleaning the hubcap. I have no idea if I fished the window or just stopped and started on the hubcap or if I washed other things in between. I kept having to go back and rewash things cause I wasn’t sure and kept getting confused.
Sometimes my mind just sorta short circuits and it makes me jerk/flinch. Like my hands, shoulders and neck tense up for a quick second.
A month or two after the ECT I bought a bunch of books to read. Shortly after that I lost my ability to read long things (more than a few sentences). Never have cracked those books. My reading has been getting better over time. And as you can see writing is easier. Just have to do it on my own time, as this is the 3rd time I have tried to write this. The other day I bought some cheap comic books to start back with helping me read book like things. I can get through about two pages then have to put it down.

Hi Doc,
Ms. Linda Andre has finally had her long awaited book published, “DOCTORS OF DECEPTION, WHAT THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT SHOCK TREATMENT.”
If you’re not aware about Linda Andre or her book I thought I’d alert you to it and hopefully you might take the time to read the publication and share your thoughts as a medical professional.
No, I did not purchase or read her book although I’ve read her thoughts and position on the subject matter through the years.
Warmly,
Herb
