Evolution of Life in 60 Seconds

Dr Shock
May 30, 2009
The Evolution of Life in 60 Seconds is an experiment in scale: By condensing 4.6 billion years of history into a minute, the video is a self-contained timepiece. Like a specialized clock, it gives one a sense of perspective. Everything — from the formation of the Earth, to the Cambrian Explosion, to the evolution of mice and squirrels — is proportionate to everything else, displaying humankind as a blip, almost indiscernible in the layered course of history. This puts our troubles, goals and deeds in perspective. Thanks Seedmagazine.comRelated posts: Rap Guide to Evolution The Rap Guide to Evolution The Evolution of Gaming ..read more »

Read the excellent introduction and quickly go and read at See First Insights into the uncertain world of healthcare If you make the rounds of the blogosphere and the traditional media these days, you find lots of talk about health care. But it’s mostly abstract, and typically fixated on the politics of this or that plan. However, there’s a whole other side to health care which isn’t seen or covered enough by traditional media or bloggers — the doctors, nurses, medical professionals and patients who actually are the health care system. Blogs make it possible for these voices to be heard, and we’re .....read more »

Emotional Intelligence and Medical Specialty Choice

Dr Shock
May 27, 2009
The relationships between doctor personalities and medical specialties continues to interest me since we regularly have to select excellent young physicians to become psychiatrists. The usual caricatures of different specialties just won't suffice as in the differences between surgeons and internists. It's fun to read so if anyone knows some about psychiatrists and others please let me know and please don't come up with psychologists. What makes physicians choose a particular specialty? In medical education assessment of Emotional Intelligence (EI) is now used as part of the selection process for some medical school applicants in an effort to consider an applicant’s .....read more »

True or false: “ Pregnant women never commit suicide, they just don’t do it because it’s against human nature” This is what experts declared to a murder trial jury in 1993 after the death of an 38 weeks pregnant woman. Because of this declaration, Eddy Gifoyle, who found his wife hanging in the garage is serving a life sentence for the murder of his pregnant wife. This guest post was written by Veerle Bergink, psychiatrist, besides patient care especially perinatal psychiatry she is also busy on her PhD research project Amazing that this actually happened in the UK, the cradle off perinatal psychiatry...
