Free Running

May 8, 2009
Now what is this? It's certainly amazing. At the end of the video as short explanation by the free runner, don't miss it. Check out this demo reel of Levi Meeuwenberg doing some jaw-dropping "free running". Free running is very similar to Parkour in the athleticism required and specific techniques and movements used, but while Parkour is about getting from one place to another in as efficient a manner as possible, free running is less directed and more creative in nature. Dyscalculia

May 7, 2009
Got some reactions and comments on my posts about the neuroscience of arithmetic. This drew my attention to dyscalculia. It seems that 4-6% of the World population suffers from dyscalculia. It has been WHO approved and is also mentioned in the DSM. There is also a Dyscalcula forum and they are present on Twitter: @dyscalculic What is Dyscalculia? Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability in mathematics. Dyscalculia is a word you use to describe when people have significant problems with numbers - but still have a normal or above normal IQ. It seems that no dyscalculic has problems with math alone, but .....read more »

The art of Pimping: pimping occurs when an attending physician (the Pimper) poses a series of difficult questions to a resident or medical student (the Pimpee). Neuroscience of Learning Arithmetic

Maybe I have told you in the a previous post that I tried to do some programming in Python. It was nice but extremely difficult. This old brain wasn't quick enough to pick up the routine. Enjoyed it while it lasted but took a lot of time and effort without much progress. As you will probably know the human brain is capable of adaptation, not only in childhood but also in adulthood. Experience and learning can alter the brain, genetic predisposition also plays a role. Maybe learning to program needs to much adaption beyond my genetic predisposition. During my medical education .....read more »

Dr Shock
May 5, 2009
The American Journal of Psychiatry has three articles on borderline personality disorder by some of the leading experts. Mostly about the development of the concept which is sumarized by Otto F. Kernberg and Robert Michels as: ...we have made tremendous strides in only a few decades, beginning with a theoretical concept in psychoanalysis that was ridiculed by most other psychiatrists, and progressing to a widely recognized clinical entity; from a pejorative label for disliked patients to a carefully defined diagnostic category; from the subject of almost no systematic study to one of the most intensively researched personality disorders—in terms of diagnosis, .....read more »

Art and Mental Illness

A post on Mind Hacks again pointed me to this website of the Wellcome Collection museum with Art and Mental Illness. The museum has two fantastic free exhibitions on the art and history of mental illness: Madness and Modernity: This multidisciplinary exhibition presents the range of ways madness and art interacted in Vienna, from designs for utopian psychiatric spaces to the drawings of patients confined in them. It explores the influence of psychiatry on early modernism and encourages us to reflect on how we deal with mental illness 100 years on. The other exhibition is: Bobby Baker's Diary Drawings: Mental illness and .....read more »
