Stethoscope Records and Analyzes Sounds

Dr Shock
August 21, 2009
Electronic stethoscope that uses Bluetooth wireless technology to wirelessly transfer body sounds, such as those from the heart and lungs, to software for further analysis. The software used to analyze the sounds is Zargis StethAssist software. My opinion, most doctors won't need this feature, they are very capable of recognizing sounds on the spot. Might be useful for medical education and for gadget freaks such as myself. Remember the truth about Pot, Sex and Anarchy in Amsterdam, a video with the real facts on the use of marijuana and soft drugs in The Netherlands compared to the USA. Also remember that Bill O'Reilly should learn his maths because he didn't understand the usage of percentages in the comparison? Well the makers of the video with the real facts have made a website: The Truth About Amsterdam. Hi, We’re Robbert (26) and Elian (28), we live in Amsterdam. Computer Use by Doctors

August 20, 2009
Now which device would you use where, for what and when. A tablet PC in the ward, a tablet PC, a computer on wheels (COW) or an ergonomic computer on wheels (COW)? The doctors made the following choices: On ward rounds, the majority of tasks (57.3%) were completed using a generic COW, while 35.9% were completed using a tablet PC. These two devices were most frequently used in the corridor, followed by the patients’ rooms, to review charts and view results. Use of a tablet PC at the workstation was observed more often than the use of a stationary PC (Table .....read more »

My favorite round up this week at Neuroanthropology is again loaded with excellent and interesting posts. I especially liked: What makes a paper "interesting"? First of all the subject but this is only interesting to a small, focused audience, all ready aware of the matter at hand. Next is the theory, which has a much broader audience. Most papers are only interesting for the subject. You should make it more interesting for a broad area by framing it in a broader theory. How? Read the post Get a Theory Part 2 on Blue Monster Read and listen to a more scientific .....read more »

Video Games Affect The Brain, Good or Bad?

Dr Shock
August 17, 2009
This is from an excellent overview about video games and the brain: Video Games Affect the Brain—for Better and Worse. The most important conclusion to be drawn after reading the post on Cerebrum of the Dana Foundation is: With the exception of educational games, most video games’ effects on brain and behavior are unintentional on the part of both the designers and the players. Nonetheless, research suggests that the effects are real. Video games are neither good nor bad. Rather, they are a powerful form of entertainment that does what good entertainment is supposed to do—it influences us. Since I am biased .....read more »

Good video explaining the dimensions of the universe and the principles of the Hubble Telescope Showing 10,000 galaxies, the overwhelming Hubble Ultra Deep Field is the most amazing, most humbling image in history, demonstrating how tiny and precious we are. This video explains how it was taken, and shows it in three dimensions. We have pointed the most powerful telescope ever build to absolutely nothing, for no other reason than that we are curious and discovered that we occupy a very tiny place in the heavens. (from the video). The Hubble space telescope, is perhaps best known for the humbling, amazing, and awesome .....read more »
