Ah yes, I see the control is sort of implicit in the bullet-point statements.

Thanks!

"chocolate abstinence, stress and exposure to chocolate cues increase urges to eat chocolate." - is right on the money though, and probably plays a larger role than anything else.

They did control for other cravings. Anyway the results are against a clear role for hormones and chocolate craving, kind regards Dr Shock

Have there been any controls done to check whether woman's cravings in general rise during different periods of the menstrual cycle? Linking chocolate craving specifically to hormone levels seems to be singling it out unfairly, when compared to the other foodstuffs people indulge in.

Also linking it to the menstrual cycle, doesn't explain male chocolate-fanatics.

I'm possibly being a little unfair to the study here, but it seems to me that studies like this tend to take something associated with women (chocolate cravings) and try to link it to another thing associated with women (hormone cycles) with mostly dissapointing levels of success. If chocolate *is* linked to the cycle in any way, it's clearly not a wonderfully obvious way.
