Exercise and Mental Health

A recent review about the relationship between exercise and mental health in the elderly discussed the results of clinical research and biological explanations for the effects of exercise on mental health. Exercise is studied in the elderly in depression, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. We've discussed the topic of exercise and depression before on this blog. The conclusion was that exercise is more effective than no treatment and that for mild to moderate depression it is efficacious and for severe depression it should be added to other treatments in the treatment program. Arshile Gorky: The Shape Shifter

Excellent video on this unknown artist Arshile Gorky, at least to me. He certainly did some impressive work. This video is also a short history of Turkish and Armenian struggle. He was inspired by Picasso in the beginning of his work. He appeared to be a source of inspiration to Willem de Kooning, an abstract expressionist artist, born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Some of his wall paitings in New York Airport were recovered after they had been paitend over during the second world war. Illuminate Depression

QUEST on KQED Public Media. A very good video about the symptoms of depression and antidepressants. It shows how antidepressants are supposed to work with nice graphics. The next topic is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS. An option when medication isn't working. One of 9 options for treatment resistant depression. A treatment is shown with some explanation of how it works. The FDA has approved TMS for depression, but is still costs a lot of money.
