Rapid Tranquillisation
Rapid tranquillisation is sometimes used with disturbed violent patients in adult in-psychiatric settings and emergency departments. It's only a small part of the algorithm for the short term management of these patients. Other aspects are prediction, prevention, other interventions than medication and a post incident review.
There's a guideline from the UK's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). This guideline makes a distinction between psycotic and non psychotic context. With psychotic context the combination of lorazepam and haloperidol is advised and olanzapine i.m. is also advised with moderate disturbance. The evidence for the latter is mainly from industry sponsored .....read more »

Social software or the use of Internet (Web 2.0) for generating your own content, to connect with one another and to share and manage content with each other is used by young people. Fine Art on Psychiatry
Impressive fine art on psychiatry, obviously someone who knows it from the inside and out.
I am a biologist and PhD. In addition I studied at the Academy of fine Art, Academy Minerva, in Groningen, the Netherlands. Extremes in behavioural and emotional expressions have always had my interest. I observed psychiatric patients and did research on their behaviour. Now, this fascination is a source of inspiration for my fine art.

Rocking Lounnge Chair
A multi purpose chair I definitely want. It takes another 6 months but it's worth the wait, more pictures here on the website of the designer Markus Krauss.
Sway is a rocking chair with a padded seat and a steel rack. The shape of the seat enables many-sided use even in pairs. The telescope mechanism locates the rocking chair in an easy chair position.

Empathy in Medicine
This is part of a title of a commentary in the JAMA. Would have reacted in the JAMA but found my blog more appropriate. The subtitle is a neurobiological perspective. This commentary does provide an update on the neurobiological findings on empathy but they're not new and can also be read on this blog. What did catch my eye was the suggestion made by the author that overvaluing scientific measurement excludes empathy, as if being a technical good doctor almost excludes being an empathetic doctor which is to my opinion a big mistakes. There are brilliant doctors, even skilled surgeons, .....read more »
Grand Rounds: Being Thankful
The Thanksgiving 2010 edition of Grand Rounds is up at Amanda Brown's facebook page.
The theme is gratitude. It's probably the first time the Grand Round is on a Facebook page. So go over to Amanda Brown for an excellent read and selection of posts from Medblogs.
At this time of year, I always stop and think about what I'm thankful for, and this year I'd say the medical blogging community is definitely on my list.

What do Women Want?
In short: women want dominant men as short term mates and prestigious men as long term mates. Dominant males being those who are ambitious, assertive and boss other people around, intimidating others. The kind of alpha males chasing desired women. The prestigious kind are those who achieve high social status through social networks (twitter?), making use of useful social aptitude and abilities or good social skills such as being able to listen and make eye contact, giving compliments.
The main purpose for this is efficacious reproductive strategies, to keep mankind on top of the evolution. It was even thought that high-dominant .....read more »
