Google Glass to demonstrate how to begin a patient exam.

Dr Shock

July 26, 2013

This is what I call good use of new technology. Stanford physician Abraham Verghese, MD, developed the Stanford Medicine 25. With the Stanford Medicine 25, residents and students are taught techniques and skills during workshops and while rounding on the wards at Stanford Hospital. The Stanford Medicine 25 website features videos and descriptions of each of the 25 topics. It includes a series of hands-on workshops teaching 25 essential techniques for examining patients.

In this recently posted video, Verghese donned Google Glass and offers a first-person perspective of how he would approach a patient and begin examining the individual’s pulse and hand.

Digital Detox from social media

Dr Shock

July 8, 2013

digital detox

Read an interesting article in the NYT: A Trip to Camp to Break a Tech Addiction. It’s about an an adults-only summer camp.It was organized by Digital Detox, an Oakland-based group dedicated to teaching technology-addled (or technology-addicted) people to “disconnect to reconnect”, but for those of you who rely on social media to live, then buy a YouTube subscriber army.

The rules of the camp are very simple:

  • no phones, computers, tablets or watches
  • no work talk
  • no discussion of people’s ages
  • no use of real names.
  • Is it worth while?

But Camp Grounded, Digital Detox’s biggest event thus far, was designed less to be a spiritual journey than a whimsical return to childhood. Campers, who spent $300 for the weekend, were sent maps, instructions and a suggested packing list designed with a self-consciously retro style that wouldn’t be out of place in a Wes Anderson film.

    Reminded me of the sixties:

a rigid culture, unable to contain the demands for greater individual freedom, broke free of the social constraints of the previous age

Social media and digital revolution won’t go away, just needs adjusting and for those who can’t work it out these camps seem to be a solution, what do you think?

ZDoggMD: A Spoonful of Medical Satire. It’s a music-medicine mashup! Viral video star ZDoggMD shows the audience at TEDMED 2013 that a spoonful of satire can can help folks take health messages seriously.

ZDoggMD brings important information in a way that patients and the younger generation can profit from the information. He uses all kinds of new media to promote the just cause.

Rapper and internist “ZDoggMD” Zubin Damania wants to shake up healthcare with ideas as bold and personable as his satirical videos.

    Targeted psychiatric medications

    Dr Shock

    May 17, 2013

Interesting lecture on the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders and their treatment.

Modern psychiatric drugs treat the chemistry of the whole brain, but neurobiologist David Anderson believes in a more nuanced view of how the brain functions. He illuminates new research that could lead to targeted psychiatric medications — that work better and avoid side effects. How’s he doing it? For a start, by making a bunch of fruit flies angry.

On May 21, 2005, David Foster Wallace got up before the graduating class of Kenyon college and delivered one of history’s most memorable commencement addresses. It wasn’t until Wallace’s death in 2008 that the speech took on a life of its own under the title This Is Water, and was even adapted into a short book. Now, the fine folks of The Glossary have remixed an abridged version of Wallace’s original audio with a sequence of aptly chosen images

Impressive speech, used parts of it for the white coat ceremony. Students should stay aware of their experiences during their clerkships, stay aware of their situation and learning opportunities. This is water…..

    Thanks Brain Pickings

Deep Brain Stimulation for Anorexia Nervosa

    Dr Shock

    May 7, 2013

    2013-05-04 -corpuscallosum

In Toronto, Canada six women were treated for anorexia nervosa with deep brain stimulation. They had a long period of many years of unsuccessful conventional management. Their average BMI were 11 to 15 in the years before the study.

The electrodes were placed just beneath the corpus callosum.

    Complications
One woman had a self limiting panick attack during the procedure. One developed a cardiac air embolus that resolved within 5 minutes during the procedure. One patient had a seizure after the operation when switching the device on. After switching it off and restarting again after one week seizures didn’t reappear.

Three out of the six women gained weight and had an improved quality of live. The BMIs increased from 11.1 to 21, 14.2 to 16, and 15.1 to 20.

The pilot was designed to assess safety, not effectiveness. The authors judge deep brain stimulation to be safe enough for further evaluation

    Dr Shock

    April 23, 2013

Designer Ruben van der Vleuten was curious about the shipping process, so he did what anyone would do. He installed a camera in a cardboard box and shipped it to himself. Below is a time-lapse video of the package’s journey.

Interesting experiment. Enjoy the video and music, thanks to FlowingData
